15-20% of couples miscarry or lose a pregnancy, and the majority do so before the 12-week mark. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) describes recurrent pregnancy loss as a disease characterized by two or more lost pregnancies. Sadly, less than 1% of couples have three or more miscarriages, and approximately 5% of couples may lose two of their pregnancies in a row. Recurrent pregnancy loss has a number of recognized reasons, including uterine structural abnormalities, hormonal problems including thyroid disorders, clotting problems like antiphospholipid syndrome, and genetic concerns. However, as this is the most typical reason for a miscarriage, you might ask your obgyn to send your miscarriage for chromosomal analysis if this is your second pregnancy loss.
